Pollinator-Friendly Design: The Art and Science of Resilient Gardens

Last weekend, the Shepherdstown Community Club (SCC) hosted an engaging presentation at the Shepherdstown Library featuring James Dillon, a PA Certified Horticulturist and owner of Native Havens LLC.

James guided attendees through the art and science of designing dynamic, functional plant communities. He explained how elements such as plant form, flower structure, growth habits, texture, ecological value, and root systems can be layered to create gardens that support pollinators at every stage of life. A key takeaway was that gardens can be both beautiful and highly functional—providing season-long ecological benefits without increasing maintenance.

Drawing from influential works like Planting in a Post-Wild World, Bringing Nature Home, and Designing with Plants, James connected theory to practice using real-world examples from his own installations.

Attendees also received a curated list of more than 100 plant species, organized by function, offering a valuable resource for creating resilient, pollinator-friendly landscapes at home.
